4 Steps To Reduce Anxiety

Date: Oct 07, 2015    By: Genesis Fitness

Anxiety sucks. We all suffer it from time to time – that tight feeling in our chest and shortness of breath. It’s not pleasant and we want to try and avoid feeling it, if at all possible. Here’s 4 tips that will help:

1. “Is it in my control?” If it is not in your control, you can’t do anything about it. Therefore there is no benefit to worrying. Of course, some things happen outside of our control that will affect us and do cause us to worry, but simply recognizing that you can’t do anything, focusing only on the present and things within your control will significantly reduce your anxiety.

How you deal with something is within your control, so don’t focus on the event, but instead your reaction to the event.

2. Write things down. Writing a journal, detailing our thoughts and feelings can be very therapeutic. It’s a way to express pain and emotions without blowing a top and screaming at a loved one, or worst, your boss.

Grab a notepad and pen, find 5 minutes before you go to bed to jot down how you’re feeling. By writing it down, it seems to remove it from your head and you can sleep peacefully.

3. Meditate. Meditation is literally the act of clearing our minds. It’s something that people are often resistant to trying – it seems hard or a little bit ‘new age woo-woo’. It doesn’t have to be sitting cross-legged atop a mountain for weeks on end. There are many phone apps or Youtube tracks where you can do a guided meditation for 10 minutes. Simply follow the instructions and reap the rewards.

4. Exercise. Your body is designed to move. Working out is a natural de-stressor. As you push your body it will clear your mind, releasing endorphins that make you feel good. Working out will draw your attention away from your mind and whatever is causing you anxiety and in to your body. Arguing with your spouse takes on less importance when you’re gasping for enough oxygen to stay conscious.

Of course if you’re suffering chronic anxiety, it might be something you want to seek professional help with, but doing these 4 things will definitely be a good start.
